Anything 100% cashmere is a good, steady, reliable seller on eBay. Sweaters, vests, coats, gloves, hats, scarves, baby wear, and blankets all do well on eBay, even used or vintage. In fact, the older vintage cashmere items are often 3 or 4 ply (thicker and more luxurious) than today's 2-ply weave. You want to look for anything that is 100% cashmere - men's, women's, and children's. Blends are good too, but 100% is what is going to get you top dollar. So, when you are browsing thrift stores and garage sales, take a few minutes to look through the sweaters for cashmere.
Next is camel hair. Again, this is a luxury fabric that holds its value and is expensive. You aren't going to see these very often, but camel hair feels a lot like cashmere and sells very well.
My next pick is Alpaca. You don't see this one too much, but when you find it, grab it. An Alpaca is sort of like a lama, and they are raised in South America. The Alpaca has long silky fleece that is made into wool. Baby Alpaca is exquisite and luxuriously soft, so look for that. When I find these, they usually sell to someone in South America.
Next is wool. Shetland wool does very well. Shetland wool comes from Shetland sheep. It is thick and warm, but can be scratchy. You often see these types of sweaters made in England or Scotland. Also look for 100% lambs wool. Lambs wool is much softer than regular wool and is not itchy.
Next is good old fashioned 100% wool. You want to look for thick sweaters -again, these sell well internationally. People in other countries don't care if they are used - in the United States we seem to have this mentality that used equals lower quality. This is simply not true. Again, look for 100% wool sweaters made in England, Scotland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. These are a finer quality.
Now for styles. My top picks here are the ski style sweaters - often described as Norwegian, Nordic, Icelandic, or Fair Isle. They usually have the decorative knitted pattern around the neckline and have beautiful patterns. They are usually thick and chunky style sweaters -and often say "hand made" or "hand loomed." Ski sweaters do VERY well. Also look for any sweaters made in Italy. Italian clothing is very high quality, and putting MADE IN ITALY in your title will get you lots of hits. Again, when I find items made in Italy, they are usually shipped right back there!
Also look for basic crew neck, turtle necks, cardigans, and vests - wardrobe essentials. The content is usually more important than the style.
Brands to look for - if it is 100% cashmere, the brand does not matter. My top brands include:
Austin Reed
Banana Republic
Chanel
Columbia
Dana Buchman
Ellen Tracy
Hugo Boss
J Crew
Lacoste
LL Bean
Marc Jacobs
Michael Kors
Ralph Lauren
